Protection Mode

Protection mode is a state where the device is operational but has implemented defenses against disruptive changes that could take the product out of service.

Implicit Protection Mode

Implicit protection mode helps prevent configuration changes that can affect system behavior and cause unintended and unforeseen changes.
This security enhancement is automatically triggered as soon as one of the following occurs:
  • When the device has an open I/O mode connection in a RUN mode
  • When the device is in a RUN mode
In protection mode, the device deactivates services that could disrupt the operation of the device, but the device continues to function. For example, configuration operations or firmware updates are disabled to not impact the operation of the device.

Restrictions in Implicit Protection Mode

When the device is in implicit protection mode, the mode prevents the following actions:
  • Change Ethernet configuration settings
  • Change address IP settings
  • Disable or re-enable Ethernet ports
  • Update the drive firmware
  • Perform any drive resets
See the PowerFlex Drives with TotalFORCE Control Parameters Reference Data, publication 750-RD101 to determine if a parameter is restricted in implicit mode. View the values listed under the ‘Stop to Change’ and ‘No Write Over I/O’ column headings.
ATTENTION:
Risk of equipment damage exist when parameter settings are changed while the drive is in implicit Protection Mode. There are port 10/11 parameters that are not restricted in implicit Protection Mode but are potentially disruptive. Exercise caution when you change parameter settings.
